The UAE e-invoicing 5-corner model in plain language

Who sends what to whom in UAE e-invoicing: supplier, two service providers, buyer and the tax authority.

You will see the phrase “5-corner model” in every UAE e-invoicing article. It simply names the five parties that touch an invoice.

 Corner 1            Corner 2             Corner 3            Corner 4
 Supplier  --->  Supplier's ASP  --->  Buyer's ASP  --->  Buyer
                      |                     |
                      +------> Corner 5 <---+
                        Tax authority (FTA)
                       (tax data reported)

The five corners

  1. The supplier creates the invoice in their own system.
  2. The supplier’s ASP is an accredited service provider. It checks the invoice, converts it to the UAE format (PINT-AE), sends it on, and reports the tax data to the FTA.
  3. The buyer’s ASP receives the invoice over the Peppol network, validates it, and delivers it.
  4. The buyer receives the structured invoice.
  5. The tax authority (FTA) receives the tax data and sends back a status message, so everyone can see if the invoice was accepted.

What this means in practice

  • You never send an invoice directly to the FTA. It reaches the FTA through the ASPs.
  • Only accredited ASPs can take part. They are approved by the authorities, which is why you must appoint one.
  • The format is fixed. PINT-AE is the UAE version of the Peppol invoice standard, so what you send is data, not a document.
  • It is decentralised. The invoice flows between providers; the FTA gets the tax data rather than approving each invoice before it goes out.

What a small business needs from this

Not much, which is the point. You need (a) an ASP in corner 2, (b) your invoice data in a clean, complete form, and (c) a way to get from the invoices you have today to the structured file the ASP expects. That third step is where tools and services that sit in front of the ASP are useful.
